The impact of Donald Trump’s election as US President cannot be overstated. Already, we have seen global chaos from war and tariffs, a ‘drill baby, drill’ ethos, enabling fossil fuel giants to ditch green technology and increase oil and gas investments at the cost of the planet, attacks on trans people, migrant workers and much more. This also has left the door open for Starmer’s Labour to attack the working class in Britain in order to increase military spending.
But these attacks on the working class can provoke movements. Since the election of Trump, people are getting in touch about joining Socialist Alternative, wanting to be part of a fight back. Many of these people have seen themselves as socialists for years, but know now is the time to get involved with an active revolutionary socialist organisation that involves itself in working-class struggle.
“Since learning about the Russian revolution as a teenager, I have always described myself as a socialist at heart. Until meeting members of Socialist Alternative at the January Women’s March in Manchester, I always felt a true socialist society was impossible. I am terrified of what is happening across the world – especially how women’s rights are being eroded under capitalism. I now feel hopeful that we can have the future we all deserve.”
Ali, Manchester
There are massive opportunities for workers and young people in the period ahead. Many people are beginning to understand that there is no future for them under capitalism, and change must be fought for through struggle. Channel 4’s Gen Z: Trends, Truth and Trust report found that 47% of people between 13 and 27 agreed that “the entire way our society is organised must be radically changed through revolution”.
“Gaining insight on how the ruling class scapegoat minorities for problems they cause is a topic me and my friends kept jumping to, especially with the rise of Reform UK. My friend had spoken to Socialist Alternative in Liverpool town centre and suggested them to me. I looked into them and decided to join.”
Mia, London
Socialist Alternative has been fighting alongside workers, students, and activists to build the type of struggles necessary to defeat the ascendency of the right wing and overthrow capitalism, replacing it with a society in which ordinary people democratically plan the economy in order to meet the needs of all – without destroying the planet. If you want to do the same, then you should join Socialist Alternative today!
