As the dust settles on the Labour Party’s electoral victory, it is clear that the problems faced by working-class people under the Tories are not going away any time soon – even as new dangers begin to arise. The cost of living crisis drags on, social care services are on their knees, and meanwhile the far right is making gains by positioning itself as a false alternative. But answers are not forthcoming from the new ‘red’ party of No.10. The new Starmer government has wasted no time in defending the interests of capitalist power, passing new austerity measures, supporting war and imperialism, and relying on the same racist scapegoating as his predecessors. The reality is that the working class, young people and the environment will continue to shoulder the economic and social burdens of the age of disorder.
This state of political déjà vu, marked only by a changing of the pro-capitalist guard (now with different ties), has left many seeking fresh ideas and new answers to the inherent questions which plague late stage capitalism.
With establishment politicians failing us so badly, where can we find the solutions we need to genuinely challenge the status quo and take on the root cause of social issues?
How do we make the lasting changes necessary to improve working and living conditions? How do we achieve and sustain real equality and a lasting alternative to capitalism? How do we tackle the growing far-right threat and build a movement against misogyny and anti-trans attacks? How can we build a meaningful challenge to the spiralling environmental catastrophe?
On 9 November at the Adelphi Hotel in the heart of Liverpool – a city famous for its unwavering opposition to Margaret Thatcher and traditions of working-class solidarity – Socialist Alternative will be hosting our annual, all-day festival of Revolutionary Ideas.
Join us for a day of Marxist discussion and debate, with a chance to meet revolutionary socialists, experienced trade unionists and other activists from across Britain and overseas, active in the struggle to change society. There will also be a bookshop with a variety of Marxist literature and materials from Socialist Alternative as well as our sister organisations in International Socialist Alternative around the world.
Our workshops will cover a range of topics, with sessions exploring the fundamentals of Marxist ideas, discussion on how to tackle racism in the face of the growing danger of the far right, and a panel discussion on the fight for a new left party and what sort of organisation we need to fight back – plus much more!.
The event is open and accessible to all at an affordable ticket price, with students able to join the entire day for only £5. Everyone is welcome, from those wanting to take their first steps into political activity, learn about how to build movements to win radical change, or just listen to inspiring Revolutionary Ideas.

Why we’re going to Revolutionary Ideas

Last November I attended the first Revolutionary Ideas event in Liverpool. It was my first visit to Liverpool where socialists and our party have historically been involved in struggle. There were many inspiring discussions at the event. It was particularly useful to discuss Israel/Palestine and how socialism could be used to end the massacre there. There was discussion around the need for a new party which is even more important a year on. Being able to talk to other members (and people who haven’t yet joined) between sessions and exchange ideas with them was also a highlight.

Revolutionary Ideas is a vital event for any trade unionist. I found the opportunity to meet activists from around the country extremely useful – hearing inspirational stories of struggle and learning new ways to organise. In addition, developing a deeper understanding of Marxist ideas gave me extra tools to analyse and understand what is happening in society, whilst leaving the event feeling optimistic about the working class’ ability to change society.

I attended last year’s event in Liverpool and found the entire day a breath of fresh air. Meeting up with comrades committed to ending capitalism from across the country left me feeling powered up. Revolutionary ideas are what will fuel militant working class struggle across the world, and the day-long event lived up to its name: it was packed with the types of socialist theory and lessons from struggle that will enable the working class to cast aside all our capitalist oppressors. A revolution is needed now more than ever, but in the meantime I will look forward to attending this year’s Revolutionary Ideas festival.
