My engagement with socialist ideas began online through leftist videos and articles, but was only truly activated when I was first introduced to Socialist Alternative through a stall outside my college covering the genocidal war in Gaza.
I found it affirming that people were speaking out and starting a conversation in real life against such injustice, and was inspired to join my first demonstration after discussing issues of race, gender, sexuality and the environment and how they all intersect through the oppression of the working class under capitalism.
Being able to express these ideas to like-minded individuals has built up my understanding and confidence in speaking out against the system of oppression enforced in this capitalist society. The openness and community of Socialist Alternative makes it a safe space for contributing ideas, and I find I’m always learning something new from those around me – I couldn’t recommend joining enough!

We need system change. Capitalism means poverty, war, climate breakdown, exploitation and oppression. Worldwide, just eight individuals are estimated to own wealth equivalent to that of half the world’s population.
Socialist Alternative stands for the alternative – a society run by and for working-class people. A society in which the vast wealth currently concentrated in the hands of a privileged elite, the capitalist class, is taken out of their hands through public ownership of the major banks and monopolies. A society in which, in place of the chaos of the market, ordinary people democratically plan the economy in order to meet the needs of all – without destroying the planet.
